With the Union Cabinet approving the amendment of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, which will incorporate provisions of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), the protection of the one-horned rhino, found in Assam and nearby areas will receive much impetus.

This will help to impose penalties on wildlife crimes, protection and conservation of various species of flora and fauna and also to control wild animal-derived products. The management of wild habitat is another area of importance.

Kaziranga National Park is the most known and visited park in the area. But its fame has not stopped it from being an infamous poaching centre. Rhino conservation and preservation of their habitat need to be strengthened.
